Title: Show Me the Way

Author: A.L. Jackson

Publication Date: October 2, 2017

My Rating: 3.75/5
The first sexy, captivating, stand-alone novel in the brand-new FIGHT FOR ME series from NYT & USA Today Bestselling Author A.L. Jackson . . .

Rex Gunner. As bitter as he is beautiful.

The owner of the largest construction company in Gingham Lakes has been burned one too many times. His wife leaving him to raise their daughter was the last blow this single dad could take. The only woman he’ll let into his heart is his little girl.

Rynna Dayne. As vulnerable as she is tempting.

She ran from Gingham Lakes when she was seventeen. She swore to herself she would never return. Then her grandmother passed away and left her the deed to the diner that she once loved.

When Rex meets his new neighbor, he knows he’s in trouble.

She’s gorgeous and sweet and everything he can’t trust.

Until she becomes the one thing he can’t resist.

One kiss sends them tumbling toward ecstasy.

But in a town this size, pasts are bound to collide. Caught in a web of lies, betrayal, and disloyalty, Rex must make a choice.

Will he hide behind his walls or will he take the chance . . .

Rynna Dayne has been running from her past ever since she was 18, but now she has to face it head on after her grandmother passes away. Having to deal with losing the woman that raised her since she was young, and the diner and house left to her she wonders is she's in over her head in coming back. Add in a grumpy neighbor with an adorable daughter and she's in for an interesting ride.

Rex Gunner is over relationships at his point in life. All he needs is his daughter and mother after dealing with heartbreak from his past relationships. He has vowed that he will be happy just devoting time to being a father and keeping is little girl happy. Having a new (hot) neighbor across the street won't change is mind either, no matter how good she is with his daughter and how much his family and friends say he deserves happiness.

This was my first read from A.L. Jackson and a  it was pretty good. I love stories that involve one of the mc's having a kid so I was all over this one as soon as I found out. For the most part I enjoyed reading this one, I felt like the beginning had be very interested in seeing where the story would take me, and see how the characters would be. I liked that Rynna was coming back to resurrect her grandma's pie shop, and in the beginning I really liked her character and could relate to her growing up as the overweight girl who didn't really fit in. The emotions developed in her helped to create a connection between her and the readers, and leave us feeling for her.

Rex was interesting in the beginning too because he had that broody, don't mess with me attitude going on with him, but he had such a sweet spot for his daughter and you could see and feel just how much he loved her whenever they were together. I was excited to read about a single father trying to make it with his daughter from the moment they were introduced at the start of the book. And his daughter was a cutie herself, as all kids are in these kinds of books.

But sadly a lot of the issues I developed started to overtake my enjoyment as the book went on.
One of the biggest problems I had was some of the pacing, because I started smelling some instalove real quick. Within the first few meetings Rynna and Rex had she was thinking about how she wanted to break the ice around his heart and figure out why he had such a sad look in his eyes, which is fine, but I would've been fine but for me personally I prefer for the characters to have more of a relationship (doesn't have to be completely serious), before they go down the deep feelings hole. After she started with these feelings I felt like she kept going on and on in a more serious manner which is something I'm pretty picky about so it was a turn off for me.

Rex was also a bit of a problem for me. I love a moody grumpy male mc as much as the next person but I felt like that characteristic on him dragged a bit for me. He'd be extremely moody then want to play nice, then moody again, then nice, then...well you probably get the point by now. There were so many times where he's make up his mind to let Rynna in then turn around and change his mind a million times. I understand he was nervous to open himself up to another possible heartbreak but it was just too damn much back and forth for my tastes. And I really wanted Rynna to put her foot down sometimes and tell him to either stay serious or forget the relationship but she just kept going with it too much for me.

Despite me not liking this book as much as I thought I would it doesn't mean you guys won't like it, so many people loved this one so maybe I'm just in the minority. If you love romances with a grumpy single dad with some angst then check it out, and hey since it's on KU you can try it for freešŸ¤·

Until next time y'all!!
