Synopsis via Goodreads: Liv's words cut off as Finn got closer. The man approaching was nothing like the boy she'd known. The bulky football muscles had streamlined into a harder, leaner package and the look in his deep green eyes held no trace of boyish innocence.

It's been twelve years since tragedy struck the senior class of Long Acre High School. Only a few students survived that fateful night—a group the media dubbed The Ones Who Got Away.

Liv Arias thought she'd never return to Long Acre—until a documentary brings her and the other survivors back home. Suddenly her old flame, Finn Dorsey, is closer than ever, and their attraction is still white-hot. When a searing kiss reignites their passion, Liv realizes this rough-around-the-edges cop might be exactly what she needs...

** I received a copy of this book from the author/publisher in exchange for an honest review. **

I read my first Roni Loren book about two years ago and wasn't very impressed by it so I definitely had some hesitation when it came to picking up her upcoming release. I actually debated for a while about whether or not I should pick this book up, but I can't resist a second-chance romance so I finally gave in and hit the request button. Plus, what better way than to redeem oneself than with a second-chance romance?

The Ones Who Got Away is a second-chance romance about letting go of the past and learning how to be brave again. It's been twelve years since the tragic shooting at Long Acre High School and a few of the survivors have returned to town to be interviewed for the documentary that is being made about that devastating day. Olivia Arias has tried her best to forget the tragic events that occurred that night, but all those tucked away memories come back when she runs into Finn Dorsey, the only boy to ever own her heart. Though it's been twelve years since the two have seen each other, their feelings for one another still burn strong and one kiss is all it takes to re-ignite the flame between them.

The Ones Who Got Away hit me with the feels. STRONG. I honestly was not expecting to be so in my feelings while reading this book. The story revolves around a school shooting that still haunts the community and it's survivors. My heart broke for Olivia. She may look like she has it together on the outside, but on the inside she's barely holding on. Olivia struggles with anxiety and PTSD and throws herself into her work to avoid having to deal with her emotions and the past. But throughout the story she starts to realize that the way she's living her life is only making her unhappier and if she truly wants things to change then she's going to have to let go of her fear. The ultimate message of "living the life that scares you" struck a cord with me and I think it's an important one because letting fear dictate your life should be no way to live.

Finn was an unexpected surprise because I almost wrote him off to be just another cocky bastard, but he's so sweet! He's also and FBI agent and if you know me then you know I have a soft spot for any hero in the military or works for the feds. He too struggles with moving on from the past as he regrets his actions and the choices he made that horrific night and has this need for redemption. Finn eventually has to come to terms with the fact that he can't save everyone and he can't change the past, but he can change his future. Although things start off a little heated between this pair, the romance does take it's time to develop which was a good thing because these two have a lot of baggage to work through. There is a lot of pain, tears and confessions but it's so worth it in the end. I was literally sitting at the edge of my seat trying to figure out how things were going to play out and was rooting for these two until the very end!

One of my favorite things about this book was the strong female friendship. I adored the bond between Olivia, Rebecca, Kincaid and Taryn and liked the fact that despite the years of being apart, they're still able to come together and lean on one another when shit gets rough. I especially loved Kincaid. She's a girl after my own heart and we are basically twins. She's a real estate agent and a blogger, like hello IT ME ON THE REAL

The Ones Who Got Away is an emotional second-chance romance and such a wonderful start to a new series. I'm excited to read the rest of these characters stories, especially Kincaid because that's my girl and if she doesn't get a book I WILL RIOT!
